A Note From the President:

It is hard to believe this is the beginning of the second quarter of 2010! I trust your had a good holiday season and hope your business has started to see some signs that the economy is beginning to bounce back.

I am pleased to report FHM had another great year in 2009, thanks in no small part to the trust and confidence you have placed in us and your willingness to work with us to make your workers’ compensation program cost effective. At the beginning of 2010 FHM finds itself in a very strong financial position with surplus at the highest level in our 54 year history.

Expanding Our Horizons . . . Seven States!

As you know, we have been focusing on expanding into states surrounding Florida as a way to provide more comprehensive service to our policyholders who do business throughout the southeast and to diversify our portfolio. FHM is now approved to operate in seven southeastern states – Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

If you have operations in any of these states, we would like to have an opportunity to help you consolidate your coverage. Also, if you have a relationship with an agency or agent in any of these states who you believe would be a good match for FHM, we would appreciate a recommendation from you that they consider offering FHM’s products.

When You File a Claim . . .

Our Loss Control Consultants and Claim Adjusters asked me to stress the importance of timely filing of claims. As you know, timely filing of claims means the FHM team is on the job quickly to help you manage the claim and to establish and maintain contact with your injured worker.

When claims are filed, information about them is made available to our Loss Control Consultants so they can work with you to address workplace safety issues and help reduce the occurrence of future accidents. As always, our main concern is the safety of your workplace. The more we know about your workplace, and the sooner we know it, the more assistance we can provide to you. That’s another way of saying we have “A Policy To Do More” and we want to work with you to make sure your workplace and workers are safe.

In addition, our experience shows that timely reporting means the process of effective claims management begins early to help ensure your workers’ compensation program provides maximum benefit for you and your employees at the “lowest ultimate cost.”

Strategic Law Partners

At FHM, we realize not all claims can be resolved easily, and we understand the importance of expert representation when it comes to the successful litigation of workers’ compensation cases. Of course, the best-case scenario is to resolve claims as quickly and economically as possible. To help us meet this goal, we have created the FHM Strategic Law Partners program to provide assistance in the claims litigation process.

FHM has selected a law firm in each area of Florida and placed them on retainer to defend all the company’s workers’ compensation claims in their respective area of the state. As FHM increases its book of business in other southeastern states, the program will be extended to those states.

Our Strategic Law Partners are part of the FHM claims handling team, meeting periodically with the claims manager and claims supervisors to discuss new developments in the law and procedures and to share successful strategies. They also help us communicate with policyholders about their claims, work closely with claims adjusters in case handling, settle cases where appropriate, defend claims vigorously as needed and help identify and prosecute fraud where it exists.

This means as an FHM policyholder you have cost-effective, expert legal counsel available to you when you need it to manage the litigation of your claims. That’s another part of “A Policy To Do More” that we are pleased to make available to you.

Raymond Orelus

Everyone at FHM was saddened to learn of the February 22, 2010 killing of Raymond Orelus, a maintenance worker who was shot and killed while attempting to thwart a robbery outside a Southside Jacksonville McDonald’s that had workers’ compensation coverage through FHM.

Mr. Orelus, a Haitian immigrant and father of five, was the sole provider for his family and was working to save enough money to bring his four sons from Haiti. Recognizing that this is a difficult time for Mrs. Orelus and her family, FHM has made a donation directly to the family to help with expenses. In addition, FHM is encouraging companies and individuals to make a donation to the account that has been established for the family of Raymond Orelus at VyStar Credit Union. Donations can be made at any branch, in the name of Mr. Orelus’ wife Miraclide Orelus, to account number 702809176.

Being Easy To Do Business With

We are always looking for ways to make it easier for you to do business with FHM. One of the best sources of ideas to do this is you, the FHM policyholders.

Recently, you have been telling our team that you would like FHM to streamline the criteria for accessing your information online. Specifically, reduce the complexity of user passwords and lengthen the life span of a user password. We hear you and we’re working on ways to accomplish that without compromising either the security of your data or the exposure risk to FHM and policyholders if data is accessed inappropriately.

We have also changed the location of the forms you need to manage your workers’ compensation program so they are accessible directly from the home page. This means your staff can easily locate and complete/download forms simply by visiting

On another note, many of you have asked for more efficient ways to make premium payments. I am please to tell you that our online bill pay system is finally here. Simply follow the prompts to register on our web site. Once you receive you login and password, click on the “Pay Bills” button and enter your bank account information. You will continue to receive monthly statements. We will not automatically draft your account, you will need to go online and initiate the payment each month.
